Llandaff’s wild meadow next to the Cathedral is under threat

The Llandaff Wild Meadow is a unique stepping stone for plants and animals, providing a rare habitat between the woodlands, the river, and the city of Llandaff.

Cardiff Metropolitan University is seeking to drain and level it for a football pitch and possibly a sports complex. Such insensitive urbanisation would destroy this unspoilt wildlife haven within the Taff Green Corridor which provides a timeless setting for the thousand year old Cathedral.

Cardiff Metropolitan already has first class sporting facilities at its Cyncoed Campus and the city of Cardiff, as European Capital of Sport 2014, is very well provided with prestige venues for a multiplicity of sports.

Land at Radyr Court Road

As a continuation of the Appeal process, the Planning Inspector will visit the Land at Radyr Court Road from 2pm at the bottom of Spooky Lane on Thursday 12 June.

We will need plenty of people to attend the site visit to show the Inspector the strength of local opposition to the development, particularly since many could not attend City Hall. We're not supposed to enter into any debate with her, but can point things out. Please come, and tell as many others as possible, including your neighbours.

We witnessed two full days of evidence and cross examination at the Appeal Inquiry, including witnesses from planning & highways for the Council (disappointing) and consultants for the Appellant. In addition, the chairman of the Llandaff Society, our two local councillors, a highways expert, Vice chair of Danescourt Community Association and three local residents made statements as 3rd parties to support our case.

The Council's barrister did a good job of getting witnesses to accept that the land in question is clearly in the protected River Corridor, and we think he was very successful in undermining the appellant's claims that the proposed access via Radyr Court Road will be safe and suitable for cyclists, pedestrians, children, elderly or disabled persons given the huge increase there could be in traffic.

It is likely that we won't know the outcome until August.

In addition, the barrister surprised us all by stating on behalf of the landowner that they consider the footpath adjacent to the field is not a right of way, and that they can close it at any time. We are, of course, disputing this. As well as affecting our longstanding access rights, it could deplete the amenity value of the land, which is without doubt their intention.

DO NOT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS !

We need to locate as many people as possible who can testify, by filling in a council form, that they have enjoyed unhindered access to "all the footpaths on the Land at Radyr Court Road" for over 20 years. We already know there are plenty of people, but can you please contact me (preferably by email) if you can state this or send me contact details including email addresses for anyone else you know who can state this. Please get permission to send their contact details. Information will then follow about the form and how to go about it.
